Arkansas Redistricting & You!
August 19, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
The Board of Apportionment is set to redraw the district boundaries of the 35 Senate and 100 House of Representatives seats in Arkansas later this year based on 2020 U.S. Census data.
The Board is made up of the governor, attorney general and secretary of state:
- Asa Hutchinson (R)
- Leslie Rutledge (R)
- John Thurston (R)
District lines determine who your representative will be in the Arkansas State Legislature. The redistricting process has been weaponized by the state legislatures across the country to gerrymander districts where instead of people choosing their representatives, representatives use demographic data in order to choose their voters, ensuring that by increasing partisanship no party can successfully challenge an incumbent. This will be the first time Republicans will be in charge of drawing lines in Arkansas in modern history. It’s extremely important to keep a spotlight on this process to ensure Arkansans keep our right to choose who represents us and not the other way around.
The gutting 2021 legislative session doesn’t have to happen again: we can demand reasonable district lines so elections can be competitive and fair.
Please make a plan to attend. Wear your favorite shade of blue and your mask, but keep it non-partisan. 🙂
